Punjab Jails Minister Laljit Bhullar on Tuesday handed over appointment letters to 12 new recruits of the Jail Department during a formal event held at his office in the Punjab Civil Secretariat, Chandigarh. The ceremony was attended by Atam Nagar MLA Kulwant Singh Sidhu and ADGP Prisons Arun Pal Singh.
The latest recruits include five JBT teachers who will provide educational support to inmates and their children as part of the government’s rehabilitation programs. Additionally, three clerks, one warder, and three Group-D staff members have also been appointed.
Minister Laljit Bhullar stated that this recruitment drive is part of a historic initiative by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s government to ensure regular appointments in the Jail Department after years of stagnation. “This is the first time in decades that the Jail Department is witnessing consistent and regular hiring,” he said, adding that the newly appointed teachers will play a vital role in educating prisoners and their families, helping pave the way for their reintegration into society.

The hiring process for another 179 positions—175 warders and 4 matrons—is nearing completion. He also announced that the government is in the process of reviving 1,220 positions in different categories within the department, with recruitment expected to commence soon.
Emphasizing the department’s focus on education and skill development, Minister Laljit Bhullar shared that under the ’ initiative, around 2,200 prisoners are currently enrolled in educational programs. In addition, 513 inmates are receiving vocational training in trades such as plumbing, tailoring, and electrical work through the Punjab Skill Development Mission.
The Minister noted that the Mann government has already provided approximately 55,000 regular government jobs in Punjab as part of its commitment to curbing brain drain and empowering the youth to become job providers. He urged the newly appointed personnel to serve the department and the public with dedication, honesty, and a strong sense of duty.
