Punjab Local Government Minister Ravjot Singh announced that the state government will soon deploy 447 electric buses in Amritsar, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Patiala, and SAS Nagar (Mohali), supported by modern charging infrastructure, to strengthen clean public transport.
Speaking at the “Punjab Conclave on E-Mobility and Sustainable Public Transportation”, the Cabinet Minister said that by early next year Punjab will undergo a major transformation in green mobility. He emphasized that Punjab’s cities are the engines of economic growth, and their sustainable progress is central to the state’s vision. Shifting from diesel to electric autos, he added, not only helps reduce pollution but also boosts drivers’ incomes and creates opportunities for women—pointing out that since March 2024, 200 women in Amritsar have joined the e-auto fleet.
The conclave, organised by CEEW in collaboration with the Punjab Government on World EV Day, showcased Amritsar’s rising adoption of e-autos. It brought together policymakers, experts, city leaders, and e-auto drivers to discuss clean and equitable mobility.
In his keynote, Kulwant Singh, Director of the Department of Local Government, Punjab, highlighted that the state’s vision of a sustainable and prosperous future is inclusive of all citizens. He noted that the conversion of 1,200 diesel autos to electric in Amritsar has been a model success achieved through targeted policy and community involvement. Building on this, Punjab is now fast-tracking the rollout of electric buses across key cities. He added that route planning, charging infrastructure, and modernisation efforts are being closely managed by PMIDC in partnership with the government, with precision, pace, and passion driving the state’s clean mobility mission forward.
