Calling the Mohammed Shami Test retirement a sad moment, Morkel also expressed happiness at seeing the fast bowler continue to bowl regularly in domestic cricket.
He said, “I was quite fortunate when I first started with the group for Shami to be a part of the team. You know, a highly skilful player, a quality guy to have around in the group. And I was quite lucky when I joined, for him to bring sort of the Indian language into the dressing room. He helped me quite a lot. So a sad day to see him go. But yeah, I mean, he’s still bowling a lot of overs back home, and it’s still great to see.”
Mohammed Shami’s Impressive Test Cricket Career
Mohammed Shami retires from Test cricket with an outstanding record. During his 64 appearances in the longest format, the right-arm fast bowler claimed 229 wickets, including six five-wicket hauls.
His ability to generate swing, extract movement and trouble batters with pace made him one of India’s most dependable fast bowlers. Shami consistently delivered important performances with both the new and old ball.
His overseas performances were equally impressive. The pacer picked up 145 wickets in 41 away Test matches at an average of 30.33. These numbers highlight his ability to perform in challenging conditions outside India.
West Indies Against India: Where Shami Made His Test Debut
Shami made his Test debut against the West Indies in 2013. Over the years, he established himself as a key member of India’s pace attack and played an important role in several memorable international campaigns.
His final Test appearance came in the 2023 ICC World Test Championship Final against Australia. Although injuries interrupted different phases of his career, he remained an important bowling option whenever fit and available.
The Mohammed Shami Test retirement marks the end of a significant chapter in Indian cricket, particularly for a fast bowler who consistently delivered across different playing conditions.
Shami Remains Available for India’s White-Ball Cricket
While Shami has stepped away from the longest format, he has confirmed his availability for India’s white-ball cricket. This means fans could still see the experienced pacer representing the country in limited-overs competitions.
The fast bowler has also been included in Bengal’s squad for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. His participation in domestic tournaments will provide him with an opportunity to maintain match fitness and demonstrate his bowling form.
Shami will also look to make an impact in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Strong performances in these domestic competitions could strengthen his chances of returning to India’s white-ball setup.
The Mohammed Shami Test retirement may have ended his journey in red-ball international cricket, but his decision to continue playing limited-overs cricket means his contribution to Indian cricket is not necessarily over. Fans will now be keen to see what the experienced pacer achieves in the next phase of his career.
