A Mohali woman receives urgent cardiac surgery under Punjab’s Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana, avoiding a Rs 4 lakh medical expense. Over 9 lakh families benefit from the scheme.
A life-threatening cardiac emergency was averted for Sukhwinder Kaur, a resident of Manikpur village in Mohali, thanks to the timely intervention under the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana. The scheme, initiated by the Punjab Government under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, enabled her to receive immediate treatment without the burden of arranging Rs 4 lakh at short notice.
Sukhwinder Kaur was rushed to a private hospital after suffering severe chest pain alongside diabetes complications. Doctors diagnosed a serious heart condition requiring urgent stent placement. The estimated cost of surgery and hospitalization ranged between Rs 3 to 4 lakh—an amount the family could not have arranged quickly.
After confirming her eligibility under the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana, hospital formalities were completed promptly. The surgery was conducted under the scheme’s annual coverage of up to Rs 10 lakh per eligible family at empanelled hospitals. After a week of post-surgery monitoring, she was discharged in stable condition. Her family said, “Our only concern was her health. The scheme allowed us to focus on recovery instead of financial worries.”

This case underscores the growing reach of the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana, under which over 9 lakh health cards have been issued across Punjab. State officials report that more than 70% of patients in government hospitals now receive cashless treatment under the scheme.
To ensure uninterrupted services, the Punjab Government has released Rs 500 crore to the insurer, guaranteeing timely settlement of claims and uninterrupted cashless access. The scheme covers major medical procedures, including cardiac surgeries, cancer treatments, and kidney ailments at both government and empanelled private hospitals.
Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh emphasized, “The aim of the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana is simple: no eligible family should delay critical treatment due to financial constraints. Our financial commitment ensures cashless access to essential procedures is a right, not an exception.”
The Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana continues to serve as a lifeline for Punjab residents, ensuring timely medical care while removing financial barriers, and demonstrating the state government’s commitment to healthcare for all.
