Veteran Australian spinner Nathan Lyon has made it clear that retirement is not on his mind just yet, as he remains determined to achieve one major milestone before ending his Test career — an elusive away series win in India.
The 37-year-old, Australia’s most successful off-spinner with 556 wickets in 138 Tests, has enjoyed remarkable success against India individually — claiming 130 wickets in 32 Tests across both countries. However, he has never been part of a victorious Australian Test series on Indian soil.
Australia’s last series win in India came during the 2004-05 tour, dubbed the “final frontier,” a feat they haven’t repeated since.
“I’ve always said I want to win away in India. I want to win away in England,“We’ll have that chance again in a couple of years, but for now, we have to stay focused on the present and take it one Test at a time — starting with doing well here in the West Indies.”
He also emphasized the importance of upcoming fixtures, including a significant home summer with the Ashes and the potential of another World Test Championship final on the horizon.
Lyon Hands Over ‘Team Song’ Tradition to Alex Carey
While Lyon remains committed to playing, he has passed on a cherished off-field role — leading Australia’s post-win team song, “Underneath the Southern Cross.” The tradition, initiated by Rod Marsh, was handed to Lyon by Michael Hussey, and the off-spinner led the celebrations in 67 of Australia’s 125 Test victories during his time.
“It’s been a massive honour to lead the team song for the past 12 years — one of the true highlights of my career,” said Lyon.
Clarifying that this doesn’t signal his retirement, he explained the decision was about strengthening team culture. “I just felt it was the right moment to pass it on, and Alex Carey is the perfect person — I admire how he carries himself both on and off the field.”
Lyon added that he now wants to “sit back and take it all in” as he watches the team celebrate future wins.
Australia will play the second Test against the West Indies starting Wednesday, as Lyon continues his pursuit of key career milestones — with one eye firmly on the future tour of India.
