“I Went to LA for One Day”: Neena Gupta on Losing Tenet Role to Dimple Kapadia
Veteran actress Neena Gupta, who recently impressed audiences yet again as Manju Devi in Panchayat Season 4, has shared a fascinating and little-known fact about her near-entry into Hollywood. In a recent interview, Gupta revealed she had auditioned for a role in Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster film Tenet — a role that eventually went to actress Dimple Kapadia.

Speaking candidly on Kareena Kapoor Khan’s talk show What Women Want Season 5, Neena Gupta recalled, “I auditioned for Tenet (for) director Christopher Nolan. I went to LA for one day to meet him and came back.” The actress further explained that she was one of five women shortlisted for the role of Priya Singh, the mysterious arms dealer’s wife in the 2020 sci-fi action thriller.
Ultimately, the role went to Dimple Kapadia, who shot her scenes in Mumbai and didn’t travel to Los Angeles. With characteristic humor and grace, Neena Gupta added, “Main Dimple ko milungi to bolungi ki tu gai bhi nahi! It is a director’s image of the character. You cannot say anything about it.”
Gupta, a National Film Award winner known for her strong roles in both film and television, also admitted that auditions have always been her weakness. “I fail in auditions. If there’s no audition, I ace it. But I always get rejected during auditions,” she said with a laugh.
Dimple Kapadia, who ultimately made her Hollywood debut with Tenet, had previously said that she initially believed the casting call was a prank. “I went just to get a picture with him [Nolan], but when I got the part, I was so nervous,” Dimple shared in earlier interviews.
