NewsClick case
On March 30, the Delhi Police Special Cell will present its 8,000-page chargesheet in the NewsClick case before a Delhi court. According to the authorities, US-based millionaire Neville Roy Singham and the editors, co-founders, and staff of the news outlet are listed as “accused” parties on the chargesheet.
In accordance with sections 153A and 120B of the IPC as well as sections 13, 16, 17, 18, and 22 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the Delhi Police Special Cell filed a complaint in this regard last year.It also arrested NewsClick’s founder Prabir Purkayastha and HR head Amit Chakravarty on October 3, 2023.
A legal action was filed against NewsClick under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the Anti-Terrorism Law on the grounds that the news portal was paid to disseminate propaganda favoring China. The news outlet is accused in the chargesheet of stealing over ₹80 crore from Chinese firms.
NewsClick case: In order to file the charge sheet in the case, the Delhi Police had requested a three-month delay in December of last year. After granting the extension at that time, the court gave the police an additional 20 days to file the charge sheet in February.Following the incident, authorities detained around 46 individuals, including journalists and portal staff, and locked NewsClick’s Delhi headquarters. They also confiscated a number of documents and electronic equipment, including many of them’s laptops and cell phones.
