NHRC : India takes suo motu cognisance of reported ostracisation of 30 people of 8 families by a village chief over a land dispute in Sambavarvadakarai town

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report regarding the alleged ostracization of a family by a village chief in Sambavarvadakarai town, Tenkasi district, Tamil Nadu. The family faced social exclusion after initiating legal action against a man over land encroachment. Additionally, seven other families were also ostracized for supporting them. When the affected families staged a protest in front of the District Collector’s office against this discrimination, the police reportedly arrested 30 members from eight families.

The Commission noted that if the details in the report are accurate, they indicate a serious violation of human rights. Consequently, it has issued a notice to the District Collector of Tenkasi, Tamil Nadu, seeking a detailed report within two weeks.

As per the media report published on 20th February 2025, the ostracized families were denied access to local shops, essential facilities, and social interaction with other residents. Instead of taking action against the village chief, the Revenue Divisional Officer attempted to mediate through peace talks to overturn the decision, but these efforts were unsuccessful.
