The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, successfully concluded its two-week online short-term internship program, which began on March 3, 2025. A total of 67 students from various universities across different regions, including remote areas, participated and completed the program.
In his valedictory address, NHRC, India Member, Justice (Dr.) Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi, extended his congratulations to the interns. He emphasized the program’s stringent selection process, highlighting the careful effort involved in selecting individuals dedicated to human rights. Designed as a foundational course, the program aimed to equip students with the knowledge and skills to grow and develop as human rights defenders. He also praised the interns for their dedication to learning, underscoring that education is a continuous journey with no endpoint.
Justice Sarangi highlighted the vital role that Human Rights Institutions play worldwide in safeguarding and advancing human rights. He urged the interns to apply their newfound knowledge in service of humanity, regardless of the specific human rights issues they choose to advocate for.
Lt. Col. Virender Singh, Director of NHRC, India, presented the internship report. In addition to sessions led by senior NHRC officers, experts, and civil society representatives on various aspects of human rights, the interns participated in virtual tours of Tihar Jail, a police station, and the Asha Kiran Shelter Home in Delhi. These experiences provided insights into the functioning of government institutions, human rights protection mechanisms, ground realities, and measures to safeguard vulnerable communities. He also announced the winners of the book review, group research project presentation, and declamation competition.
