Representing Team S8UL, Sarin defeated France’s Maxime Vachier-Lagrave with a score of 1.5-0.5 in a decisive round, following an earlier 2-0 sweep of Dutch GM Anish Giri. The victories mark a sharp comeback for the young Indian, who had lost his opening match to compatriot Arjun Erigaisi on July 29.
With his latest win, Sarin joins Erigaisi in the knockout rounds, setting up an exciting stage for Indian chess in the global esports arena.
In a post-match interview with Firstpost, Nihal Sarin spoke candidly on multiple topics, including Magnus Carlsen’s recent remarks downplaying the potential of India’s reigning classical World Champion Gukesh D. He also commented on Carlsen’s now-viral table slam reaction after losing to Gukesh at Norway Chess earlier this year.
