Nitish Kumar unanimously re-elected as NDA leader in Bihar; Samrat Chaudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha continue as Deputy CMs. NDA wins big with 202 seats in the Assembly elections.
Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has been unanimously re-elected as the leader of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) following the party’s resounding victory in the recent Assembly elections. The decision came after BJP leader Samrat Chaudhary recommended Nitish Kumar’s name during the NDA meeting. Nitish Kumar is set to take oath as Chief Minister for a historic 10th term on Thursday.
Earlier, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) maintained continuity by electing Samrat Chaudhary as its legislative party leader and Vijay Kumar Sinha as his deputy, with both leaders continuing as Deputy Chief Ministers of Bihar.
NDA Allies Hail Victory
In the NDA meeting, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan congratulated the people of Bihar for delivering a decisive mandate, emphasizing that “Nitish Kumar will continue to lead.” HAM chief Jiten Ram Manjhi praised Nitish Kumar for serving for over two decades without facing anti-incumbency and lauded him as a leader “fearless, honest, and free from family politics.”
Upendra Kushwaha acknowledged the role of women voters in the NDA’s historic win and credited the success to the efforts of both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Nitish Kumar. He noted that for the first time, there was seamless coordination among alliance partners at the grassroots level, strengthening public perception of a united NDA.
NDA Secures Majority in Bihar Assembly
The NDA achieved a commanding majority in Bihar, winning 202 out of 243 seats. The BJP emerged as the single-largest party with 89 seats, closely followed by JD(U) with 85 seats. Smaller allies, including LJP (RV) with 19 seats, HAM with five, and RLM with four, helped consolidate the alliance’s dominance.
Grand Oath Ceremony Scheduled
Nitish Kumar will take oath at Patna’s Gandhi Maidan on Thursday morning in a grand ceremony, alongside several ministers. Security has been ramped up for the event, which will also see the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and chief ministers from other NDA-ruled states.
Cabinet Portfolios Trigger Backchannel Talks
With the swearing-in imminent, negotiations over cabinet portfolios are ongoing. The Home Ministry, traditionally held by Nitish Kumar, remains a key point of discussion. JD(U) leaders are reluctant to give up the portfolio, while the BJP seeks a larger share of key ministries. The position of Assembly Speaker is also under negotiation, with both parties claiming interest.
Reports indicate that the expanded cabinet may include five to six new ministers from JD(U) and BJP, while smaller allies LJP (RV), HAM, and RLM are expected to receive three, one, and one ministerial positions, respectively.
JD(U) leader Rajeev Ranjan Prasad confirmed that discussions are ongoing and that final decisions on portfolios would be announced soon.
