Nitish Kumar to take oath as Bihar CM for a record 10th term on Nov 20; NDA wins big in assembly elections, BJP appoints observers for smooth transition.
In a historic political event, Nitish Kumar is set to take oath as the Chief Minister of Bihar for a record 10th term on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at Gandhi Maidan in Patna. The swearing-in ceremony comes after the decisive victory of the BJP-JD(U)-led NDA in the recently concluded Bihar Assembly elections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with several chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from NDA-ruled states, is expected to attend the event.
Ahead of the swearing-in, Nitish Kumar will likely be elected as the legislature party leader on November 19, a day prior to the official oath ceremony, according to JD(U) sources cited by PTI. On Monday, Kumar met Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan to recommend the dissolution of the current legislative assembly, initiating the transition process for the new government.
BJP Appoints Observers for Legislative Party Elections
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has appointed senior leaders as observers for the election of the party’s legislative group leader. Keshav Prasad Maurya, Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, has been named as the central observer. Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti will serve as central co-observers to ensure smooth proceedings.

NDA Government Formation and Ministerial Allocation
Preparations are in full swing at Gandhi Maidan, with security and protocol arrangements underway. The NDA is planning a balanced ministerial allocation to represent all alliance partners. Reports indicate that approximately one ministerial post will be allotted for every six MLAs. The coalition is expected to include representatives from BJP, JD(U), Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM), and Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) [HAM(S)].
Sources suggest that one ministerial position each may go to RLM and HAM(S), three to LJP(RV), while the remaining 30-31 seats will be divided between BJP and JD(U). Adjustments are possible, including changes to the posts of the two deputy chief ministers. The Speaker of the Bihar Assembly is likely to be from BJP, while Tejashwi Yadav has been elected as the Leader of Opposition (LOP), marking his second tenure in the role.
NDA’s Landslide Victory in Bihar Assembly Elections
The NDA’s overwhelming victory in the 243-member Bihar Assembly has reshaped the state’s political landscape. The alliance secured a total of 202 seats, with BJP emerging as the single largest party with 89 seats and JD(U) winning 85 seats. LJP(RV) won 19 seats, HAM(S) 5 seats, and RLM 4 seats.
In contrast, the Mahagathbandhan alliance suffered a major setback. RJD managed only 25 seats, Congress 6 seats, CPI(ML)(L) 2 seats, and CPI(M) 1 seat, losing its position as the single largest party in the Assembly.
The upcoming swearing-in ceremony will mark a historic milestone for Nitish Kumar, who will become the first leader in Bihar’s political history to take oath as CM ten times, reinforcing his long-standing influence and leadership in the state.
