Pakistan reached the Asian Games 2026 semifinals without playing a ball as rain washed out their quarterfinal against Hong Kong in Nisshin.
Pakistan have secured a place in the semifinals of the Asian Games 2026 men’s cricket tournament without playing a single delivery. Persistent rain in Nisshin forced the quarterfinal against Hong Kong to be abandoned without a toss, allowing Pakistan to advance to the last four on the basis of their higher ICC T20I ranking.
The result means Pakistan Asian Games semifinal qualification has been confirmed, while Hong Kong’s campaign has ended without the team getting an opportunity to compete in the knockout match.
Rain Prevents Pakistan vs Hong Kong Quarterfinal
The Pakistan-Hong Kong quarterfinal was scheduled to be played at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin. However, continuous showers left the playing conditions unsuitable for cricket.
Officials eventually called off the contest without a ball being bowled. With no result possible, Pakistan progressed to the semifinals because of their superior ICC T20I ranking.
The Pakistan Asian Games semifinal berth was therefore confirmed without the team needing to take the field in the quarterfinal.
Pakistan Entered Knockout Stage Directly
Pakistan were among the teams that received direct entry into the quarterfinal stage, alongside India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Hong Kong, meanwhile, secured their place in the knockout round after finishing second in Group B.
Pakistan and Hong Kong have also met in previous major Asian cricket competitions. Pakistan won their meetings at the 2022 Asia Cup and the 2023 Asian Games.
This time, however, the weather prevented another contest between the two sides.

Pakistan’s Semifinal Opponent
With the quarterfinal result settled, Pakistan will now face the winner of the Bangladesh-Malaysia quarterfinal in the semifinal on October 1.
The Pakistan Asian Games semifinal will be the team’s first competitive match of the tournament if weather permits. Pakistan’s new-look squad is being led by Sahibzada Farhan.
The medal matches are scheduled for October 3, with the bronze-medal playoff and gold-medal final set to take place on the same day.
Rain Also Threatens India’s Quarterfinal
Weather problems were not limited to the Pakistan-Hong Kong fixture. Rain later affected the second quarterfinal at the same venue, involving India and Afghanistan.
The wet conditions delayed the start of that match, with the toss also held up. The outcome of that fixture would determine another semifinalist, adding further uncertainty to the knockout schedule.
For Pakistan, however, there was no such uncertainty after the official decision. Their quarterfinal was abandoned, and the team was awarded progression to the last four based on the tournament’s ranking criteria.
Pakistan Await First Match of the Tournament
The unusual qualification means Pakistan will enter the Pakistan Asian Games semifinal without having played a match at the Asian Games 2026 men’s cricket competition.
While the team had already secured direct entry into the knockout stage, the rain has now extended its wait for an actual game. The semifinal on October 1 will provide Pakistan with its first opportunity to compete on the field at the Games.
For Hong Kong, the washout brings their campaign to an end without a ball being bowled in their quarterfinal. Pakistan, meanwhile, will now prepare for the semifinal and await the winner of Bangladesh and Malaysia.
