Delhi CM Rekha Gupta has called for a formal investigation into the Aam Aadmi Party’s assertion that a British-era execution chamber, or ‘Phansi Ghar’, existed within the Assembly complex. The structure had been inaugurated in 2022 by former CM Arvind Kejriwal. CM Gupta dismissed the claim as completely false and accused the AAP government of theatrics, demanding the expenses incurred be recovered. “This isn’t a gallows, it’s a fabrication—a complete drama. AAP excels in drama and psychology,” she said during her address.
Speaker Labels It a ‘Tiffin Room’
Supporting CM Rekha Gupta, Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta cited official maps and records from the National Archives, stating that the area in question was originally a tiffin room equipped with a pulley-based lift, not a gallows. He added, “There is no historical evidence suggesting this site was used for executions. Even the claim about a tunnel leading to Red Fort is baseless.”
The BJP accused the Aam Aadmi Party of manipulating historical facts and spreading misinformation. BJP MLA Ajay Mahawar called for a censure motion against Kejriwal, while others demanded a public apology from the former Chief Minister.
PWD Minister Parvesh Verma added that items found in the room—such as ropes and shoes—were likely belongings of workers, not evidence of an execution site.
AAP Responds
In defense, AAP MLAs rejected the allegations. MLA Jarnail Singh argued that even ChatGPT cites the location as a gallows. Leader of Opposition Atishi criticized the ruling BJP, saying the controversy was a diversion from more urgent issues.
“Is this truly what the Assembly should focus on instead of addressing matters like education, healthcare, and public safety?” she questioned.
