Punjab government launches Baba Phool Government Old Age Home in Barnala with 72 beds, free food, accommodation and healthcare for senior citizens.
The Punjab government has strengthened its efforts to support senior citizens with the operationalisation of the Baba Phool Government Old Age Home in Tapa, Barnala district. The facility has been developed to provide elderly people in need with a safe, dignified and supportive place to live.
The modern old age home was constructed at a cost of Rs 8.21 crore and was inaugurated on April 9, 2025. The facility has a capacity of 72 residents, while 16 elderly people are currently staying there. Residents are provided accommodation, meals and healthcare services free of cost.
Focus on Safety, Dignity and Elderly Care
Punjab Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr Baljit Kaur said the state government is committed to ensuring that senior citizens receive proper care and live in an environment that respects their dignity.
According to the minister, the purpose of the facility goes beyond providing shelter. The government aims to create a supportive atmosphere where elderly residents can feel secure, cared for and connected with others.

Modern Facilities for Senior Citizens
The Baba Phool Government Old Age Home has been equipped with several facilities designed to meet the daily needs of its residents. These include comfortable dormitories, nutritious food, clothing and medical care.
Residents can also make use of a library, gardening area, indoor games and recreational activities. To promote physical fitness and mental well-being, special yoga sessions are conducted twice a week.
Admission Support for Elderly People in Need
Dr Baljit Kaur appealed to destitute senior citizens and elderly people who require proper care to approach their respective District Social Security Officer for information about the admission process.
She also called upon Panchayati Raj institutions, local bodies and social organisations to help identify elderly people who need assistance. Such individuals can then be guided towards the services and facilities available at the government-run old age home.
The Punjab government said initiatives such as the Baba Phool Government Old Age Home are aimed at ensuring that vulnerable senior citizens can access essential care while living in a safe and respectful environment.
