Punjab Local Government Minister Dr. Ravjot Singh hailed the Punjab Budget 2025 as a forward-thinking blueprint aimed at accelerating the state’s development and enhancing public welfare. With ₹5,983 crore earmarked for a comprehensive urban revamp, the budget ensures a major facelift for cities across Punjab.
Calling the budget pro-people, Dr. Ravjot Singh emphasized that in the upcoming financial year, urban areas will witness extensive infrastructure upgrades, including better roads, footpaths, modernized electricity networks, improved traffic and street lighting, enhanced water supply, and upgraded bus stands to promote seamless and eco-friendly mobility. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Punjab is undergoing an unprecedented transformation to provide world-class urban amenities, he added. The budget, presented by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, is set to bring record-breaking development to the state.
Major Urban Infrastructure Overhaul
In the first phase, the cities of Ludhiana, Amritsar, Jalandhar, and SAS Nagar (Mohali) will experience holistic development. The government has allocated ₹140 crore to upgrade road infrastructure in these cities, with plans to construct world-class roads designed by renowned architects to meet international standards. Additionally, contractors will be responsible for their maintenance over the next 10 years. Well-designed footpaths will be developed in all cities to ensure obstruction-free pedestrian movement.
To standardize urban road infrastructure, a comprehensive blueprint will be implemented, ensuring uniform road width across cities and the elimination of traffic bottlenecks. Roads will have clearly marked lanes as per global standards, with lane repainting scheduled every three months for better traffic management.
Boost to Urban Amenities and Public Transport
The budget also includes provisions for ₹225 crore under the Punjab Municipal Development Fund and an additional ₹300 crore under PMSIP, aiming to upgrade essential services in 166 towns, which house 40% of Punjab’s urban population. These funds will be utilized to enhance sanitation, water supply, sewerage systems, roads, and street lighting, significantly improving the quality of urban life.
To promote sustainable and efficient public transport, the Punjab Government has also announced the procurement of 347 electric buses (e-buses). This initiative will not only provide eco-friendly and reliable transport options but also help reduce dependency on private vehicles, contributing to cleaner and more sustainable urban mobility.
