The Punjab Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, on Thursday approved the presentation of Budget estimates for 2025-26 in the upcoming session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha.
The decision was taken during a Council of Ministers meeting at the Chief Minister’s official residence. A spokesperson from the Chief Minister’s Office revealed that Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema will present the budget in the Vidhan Sabha on March 26. Additionally, the Cabinet approved the placement of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India’s report for 2023-24 before the House.
25% Reservation for EWS Students in Private Schools
In a significant move to enhance access to quality education for economically weaker sections (EWS), the Cabinet approved amendments to the Punjab Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Rules, 2011. The amendment removes Clause 7(01), which had previously restricted direct admission of EWS students to private schools.
This landmark decision ensures that 25% of seats in private schools, as mandated by the Right to Education Act, will now be accessible to EWS students without any hurdles. The reform is expected to bring about a transformative change in the state’s education system by allowing underprivileged students to benefit from quality education in private institutions, alongside government schools.
