Punjab canal water usage rises sharply under Mann government. Gurmeet Singh Khuddian highlights ₹2.40 crore projects and irrigation growth to 78%.
Punjab has witnessed a significant transformation in its irrigation system, with canal water usage increasing nearly threefold under the leadership of the Aam Aadmi Party-led government.
Cabinet Minister Gurmeet Singh Khuddian recently inaugurated development projects worth ₹2.40 crore focused on strengthening canal infrastructure, marking another step toward improving agricultural efficiency in the state.
Canal Water Usage Sees Massive Growth
Speaking at the event, Gurmeet Singh Khuddian emphasized that the share of irrigation through canal water has surged from 28% to 78% in just four years.
This sharp rise reflects the government’s push to reduce dependency on groundwater and promote sustainable irrigation practices across Punjab.

The minister also highlighted extensive work carried out on approximately 15,000 kilometers of canals, distributaries, and minor channels. These upgrades have improved water flow, minimized wastage, and ensured that irrigation reaches even the tail-end farmers.
According to Gurmeet Singh Khuddian, these efforts are part of a broader vision led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to modernize Punjab’s agricultural infrastructure.
Focus on Sustainable Farming
The increase in canal water usage is being seen as a major step toward addressing Punjab’s groundwater crisis. By encouraging farmers to rely more on canal irrigation, the government aims to preserve depleting water tables while reducing input costs for farmers.
What This Means for Farmers
With better access to canal water:
- Farmers can reduce dependence on costly tube wells
- Electricity consumption for irrigation may decrease
- Crop yields are expected to improve due to consistent water supply
