Since early morning, worshippers thronged temples, chanting mantras, singing bhajans, and ringing bells as rituals were performed. The day holds special importance in Mathura, Krishna’s birthplace, and Vrindavan, where he spent his childhood performing his baal leela. Temples were adorned with flowers, chandeliers, and beautifully dressed idols of Lord Krishna in vibrant attire and ornaments.
At midnight, the highlight of the festival—the Krishna Abhishek—was performed, where the idol was bathed with milk, curd, ghee, honey, and water amid the sound of bells, conch shells, and Vedic chants. Devotees then received prasad after the bhog, waiting in long queues for Krishna’s darshan and blessings.
The traditional Dahi Handi celebrations, also called Gopalakala or Utlotsavam, were organized in many places, recalling Lord Krishna’s playful image as Makhan Chor (butter thief).
