In a major success under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s mission to ensure a safe and secure Punjab, the state police have thwarted a planned target killing by arresting five members of the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang. The operation led to the seizure of two firearms— a PX5 pistol and a .32 bore pistol—according to Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav, who briefed the media on Tuesday.
This intelligence-based operation was jointly executed by the Counter Intelligence wing of Punjab Police, along with the Amritsar Rural and Batala district police.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Lovepreet Singh, Sikandar Kumar alias Gola, and Onkarpreet alias Jashan— all from Shahabad village in Batala; Gagandeep alias Giani from Gandhi Camp in Batala; and Mehakpreet Singh from Amritsar.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria—currently incarcerated in Silchar Jail, Assam—plotted the murder of a rival gang member to avenge his mother’s recent killing, further escalating gang rivalries in the region.
DGP Yadav said that the murder plot was being executed through Jaggu’s associate Husandeep Singh, who is based in the USA. Husandeep coordinated with local operatives, including Lovepreet Singh, to arrange shooters and carry out the killing. Further investigation is underway to identify broader connections linked to this conspiracy.
The first arrest in the case was made by Amritsar Rural Police, under SSP Maninder Singh, who nabbed Mehakpreet Singh. During questioning, Mehakpreet disclosed that Sikandar Kumar alias Gola possessed vital information regarding the plan and the shooters.
Acting on this lead, Batala Police, under SSP Suhail Qasim Mir, arrested Sikandar Kumar along with his associate Onkarpreet alias Jashan. Further interrogations led to the arrest of another suspect, Gagandeep alias Giani.
During detailed questioning, Sikandar Kumar revealed that he was operating under instructions from Lovepreet Singh, identified as a central coordinator in the conspiracy. Batala Police later arrested Lovepreet in a follow-up operation.
Lovepreet confessed that the assassination plan was being directed by Husandeep Singh from the United States, with the target being a rival gang member.
A case has been registered under FIR No. 80/2025 at Police Station Rangar Nangal, Batala, invoking Section 25 of the Arms Act and Sections 61(2) and 111 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
