Punjab government disburses ₹1,583 crore under social security schemes, benefiting 36 lakh people including pensioners, widows, and disabled citizens.
The Punjab government has disbursed more than ₹1,583 crore under its social security and welfare schemes during the current financial year, providing crucial financial assistance to millions of vulnerable residents across the state.
The initiative aims to support senior citizens, widows, destitute women, orphaned and dependent children, as well as persons with disabilities, ensuring timely financial relief for their daily needs.
Punjab Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur stated that nearly 36 lakh beneficiaries are currently receiving benefits under various welfare programs. She emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring that all eligible individuals receive assistance without delay or inconvenience.

According to the minister, the state government has allocated a total budget of ₹6,131.91 crore for social security and welfare schemes in the 2026–27 financial year. This allocation reflects the government’s focus on strengthening financial support systems for economically weaker and vulnerable sections of society.
Out of the total funds released so far, more than ₹1,048 crore has been directly transferred as old-age pension to eligible beneficiaries. In addition, over ₹535 crore has been distributed under multiple social welfare schemes covering widows, destitute women, orphaned children, dependent minors, and persons with disabilities.
Officials said that the government has prioritized transparency and efficiency in the delivery system to ensure that financial assistance reaches beneficiaries on time. The use of streamlined and digital processes has significantly reduced delays in fund distribution.
The minister further highlighted that social security is not just a budgetary commitment but a key responsibility of the state toward protecting its most vulnerable citizens. She added that continuous improvements are being made in the implementation process to make welfare delivery more effective and accessible.
The Punjab government’s welfare initiatives have already benefited millions of families, helping them meet essential expenses and improve their standard of living. Authorities indicated that the coverage of these schemes is expected to expand further in the coming years.
