Two- and Three-Wheelers Drive Auto Sales Despite PV Slump
Passenger vehicle (PV) sales in India saw a year-on-year decline of 9% in August 2025, according to the latest data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam). PV dispatches, which track the number of units shipped by manufacturers to dealerships, dropped to 321,840 units in August from 352,921 units during the same month last year.

Despite the slowdown in passenger vehicles, two-wheeler sales recorded healthy growth, rising 7% to 1,833,921 units, up from 1,711,662 units in August 2024. The surge was largely driven by rural demand and festive season buying. Within this segment, scooter sales jumped 13% to 683,397 units, while motorcycle dispatches grew 4% to 1,106,638 units.
The three-wheeler segment also performed strongly, hitting a record high of 75,759 units, an 8% increase compared with 69,962 units in August 2024.
Siam noted that the growth in two- and three-wheelers helped balance overall volumes, partially offsetting the decline in passenger vehicle sales. Industry experts point out that buyers were likely holding off on PV purchases ahead of upcoming GST-driven price cuts, which could further impact monthly sales trends.
