Railway administration strengthens crowd control measures at New Delhi and other stations during Diwali and Chhath festivals. Holding areas for 7,000 passengers and increased security deployed for smooth travel.
As the festive seasons of Diwali and Chhath approach, railway authorities are gearing up to handle the surge in passenger traffic at major stations like New Delhi. To manage the heavy rush effectively, the railway administration has put several measures in place, including the preparation of a holding area with a capacity to accommodate 7,000 passengers at New Delhi station.
With the onset of the festivals, railway stations such as New Delhi and Anand Vihar Terminal are expected to witness massive crowds over the next few days. Managing this influx poses a significant challenge for the authorities, who have proactively implemented solutions to ensure smooth operations and passenger safety.

Holding Areas to Ease Platform Congestion
To reduce crowding on platforms, a permanent holding area that can hold up to 7,000 passengers is ready at New Delhi station. Additionally, an interim holding area is being set up at Anand Vihar Terminal. Passengers holding general tickets will be kept in these designated holding zones and allowed to enter platforms only when trains arrive, preventing overcrowding.
Increased Deployment of Railway Protection Force and Commercial Staff
The Railway Protection Force (RPF) and commercial department staff have been significantly increased to maintain order and safety during peak times. Approximately 1,400 additional RPF personnel and 300 commercial staff will be deployed at New Delhi and Anand Vihar Terminal stations. Special duty officers have been appointed to oversee crowd control and manage security at busy stations.
Despite these efforts, crowd control remains a challenge, especially when trains arrive simultaneously, causing sudden spikes in platform congestion. To address this, separate entry gates are being created for reserved and unreserved ticket holders at New Delhi station, India’s busiest railway hub.
Control Rooms and Enhanced Monitoring for Passenger Convenience
Control rooms staffed with personnel from various departments are being established at New Delhi, Anand Vihar Terminal, and Old Delhi stations. These control rooms will facilitate real-time monitoring and coordination to promptly respond to any emergencies or crowd-related issues. A special duty officer will oversee the entire operation to ensure efficient management.
