Bengaluru police file FIR against Ranveer Singh for mocking Chavundi Daiva scene from Kantara at IFFI 2025; actor issues public apology.
Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh is facing legal trouble after a recent controversy surrounding the film Kantara: Chapter 1. On Wednesday, Bengaluru police filed an FIR against the actor for allegedly mocking the sacred ‘Chavundi Daiva’ scene during the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2025 in Goa. The FIR was lodged following a private complaint by advocate Prashant, based on court instructions.
Details of the FIR
The complainant, a devotee of Chavundi Daiva, a revered guardian spirit worshipped in the coastal Karnataka Bhuta Kola tradition, stated that Ranveer Singh’s actions on stage were insulting and derogatory to the deity. According to the FIR, Ranveer allegedly performed the emotional ‘Chavundi Daiva’ scene despite being requested not to do so, mocking the divine tradition in a humorous and vulgar manner.
The FIR highlights that Chavundi Daiva is a sacred guardian spirit, symbolizing justice, protection, and feminine divine energy, and referring to the deity as a “female ghost” is considered deeply offensive and blasphemous.
The actor has been charged under Sections 196, 299, and 302 of the Bengaluru Nagarothana Shikayat (BNS) for acts prejudicial to communal harmony and deliberate hurt to religious sentiments. The complaint also notes that a video of the incident went viral, causing mental anguish and distress among devotees.

Ranveer Singh Issues Public Apology
Following the backlash, Ranveer Singh took to Instagram Stories to issue a public apology. He wrote, “My intention was to highlight Rishab’s incredible performance in the film. Actor to actor, I know how much it would take to perform that particular scene in the way that he did, for which he has my utmost admiration. I have always deeply respected every culture, tradition and belief in our country. If I’ve hurt anyone’s sentiments, I sincerely apologise.”
The actor’s apology attempts to clarify that his actions were meant to appreciate Rishab Shetty’s performance, not to disrespect any religious beliefs or traditions.
Public Reaction and Cultural Sensitivity
The incident has sparked debates online about the sensitivity of performing religious or culturally significant scenes and the responsibility of public figures to avoid actions that might offend devotees. While some fans have accepted Ranveer’s apology, others argue that celebrities should exercise greater caution when engaging with religious content.
This case marks another instance of Bollywood stars facing scrutiny over cultural and religious representation, highlighting the balance between creative expression and respect for tradition in India.
