According to an Apple press release, changes to their repair program will start with particular iPhone models later this year.
Apple plans to simplify and lower the cost of living for iPhone customers. It has expanded its iPhone repair options by allowing the use of used parts. Apple has declared that pre-owned Apple parts will be available for use in repairs by both independent repair shops and consumers. Additionally, Apple stated that the original factory calibration’s complete functionality and security will now be available to the genuine, used parts.
“For the last two years, teams across Apple have been innovating on product design and manufacturing to support repairs with used Apple parts that won’t compromise users’ safety, security, or privacy,” stated John Ternus, senior vice president of Hardware Engineering at Apple, in reference to this. We’re thrilled to be giving our customers even more options and convenience with this most recent addition to our repair program, all the while contributing to the longevity of our goods and their components.
Modifications To Arrive Later This Year
According to an Apple press release, changes to their repair program will start with particular iPhone models later this year. But the tech behemoth acknowledged in a statement to The Washington Post that these new regulations will first apply to parts for iPhone 15 models and later, including screens, batteries, cameras, and biometric sensors used for Face ID or Touch ID.
Apple stated that both consumers and service providers will no longer need to supply a device’s serial number when obtaining repair parts in an effort to expedite the repair process. To further avoid the reuse of parts from a stolen iPhone, the company plans to expand the Activation Lock function to iPhone components. In short, the calibration functionalities of a part will be limited if a device undergoing repair detects that the part was obtained from another device that has Lost Mode or Activation Lock activated.
