Filmmaker Rohit Shetty Responds to Conflict Rumors with Shah Rukh Khan After Dilwale
New Delhi | 23April 2025 — Rohit Shetty, the ace filmmaker behind some of Bollywood’s biggest blockbusters, has addressed the longstanding rumours about a supposed fallout with Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan following their collaboration on Dilwale (2015). The filmmaker recently spoke candidly about their relationship in an interview with film critic Komal Nahta on his Game Changers podcast, putting an end to any speculations surrounding the two.
Rohit Shetty Reveals How Dilwale’s Outcome Led to New Ventures with Shah Rukh Khan
Dilwale, which reunited Rohit Shetty and Khan after their massive success with Chennai Express (2013), failed to create the same box-office magic. Despite its star-studded cast and grand scale, Dilwale was met with lukewarm reviews and couldn’t replicate the success of their earlier venture. This led to widespread rumours about a rift between Rohit Shetty and Khan, as the two have not worked together since the film’s release.
However, Rohit Shetty was quick to put these rumours to rest. “Nahi aisa kuch nahi (There’s nothing like that),” he said, dispelling any notions of a personal or professional fallout with Shah Rukh Khan. The filmmaker explained that their decision not to collaborate again immediately after Dilwale had nothing to do with any tension between them. Instead, it stemmed from a mutual respect and a desire to move forward on their own terms.
Shetty revealed that after Dilwale, both he and Khan chose to pursue their own independent projects. “Ek respect hai humare beech me aur Dilwale ke baad ye hua ki immediately phir humne humare khud ki production house kholi. Humne decide kiya ki hum khud ki filmein banayenge. Agar loss bhi ho to humara ho, jabki loss nahi hua tha (We have mutual respect. We started our own production house after Dilwale. We decided to make our own films so that if we face a loss, it is on us. However, we did not face a loss in Dilwale),” Rohit Shetty explained.
While Dilwale did not perform as expected at the Indian box office, it was a different story overseas. The film, which starred Khan alongside Kajol, Varun Dhawan, and Kriti Sanon, went on to make Rs 376.85 crore worldwide, making it a commercial success internationally despite the lukewarm reception in India. The film’s clash with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani, which also featured Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, and Priyanka Chopra, added to the challenges of Dilwale’s performance during its release.
