Sam Altman Pulls the Plug Last Minute — The Delay Leaves Devs Hanging

Sam Altman Says OpenAI’s New Model Is ‘Not Ready’—Here’s Why That’s a Big Deal

OpenAI has hit pause on the launch of its much-hyped open-source AI model, originally set for this summer. CEO Sam Altman announced the indefinite delay, citing the need for more safety checks before the model is released into the wild.

“We’re not sure how long it’ll take,” Sam Altman said on X, explaining that once the model’s “weights” are out, there’s no turning back. This open model was expected to be a big leap—fully downloadable and free from the usual guardrails.

OpenAI’s head of research, Aidan Clark, called the model “phenomenal,” but admitted it still needs polishing to meet the company’s standards.

The delay opens the door for rivals. Just hours earlier, Chinese startup Moonshot AI unveiled Kimi K2—a massive new model already scoring high on performance benchmarks. With Google DeepMind, Anthropic, and Elon Musk’s xAI also racing ahead, OpenAI’s slowdown could cost them the spotlight.

Still, Altman teased that the model may have some “unexpected and amazing” capabilities. For now, the AI world will have to wait—and wonder.
