Sanjay Singh says the BJP stops a Dalit from becoming mayor.

AAP Sanjay Singh

Sanjay Singh: The AAP referred to the BJP as “anti-Dalit” on Friday, claiming that “Delhi could not have a Dalit Mayor because of the BJP leaders’ hatred towards Dalits.” The accusations were made the day after the Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s scheduled April 26 elections for mayor and deputy mayor were postponed on Thursday.

“The Constitution written by Babasaheb Ambedkar says that a person from Dalit community will become Mayor of Delhi for one term,” stated AAP leader and Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh. That is not what the BJP wants.

Sanjay Singh stated, “The L-G is saying that he works on the aid and advice of the chief minister,” while displaying a letter. However, he didn’t name BJP councilor Satya Sharma as the mayoral poll presiding officer until last year, even though the Chief Minister had stated that Mukesh Goel, the senior councillor, was the most qualified candidate.

AAP accuses L-G of bias

The Lieutenant Governor (L-G) of Delhi came under heavy fire from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), who said that he was “acting as a pawn of the BJP with an anti-Dalit mindset in cancelling the mayoral elections in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD)”. There was indignation about the postponement of the elections, which were supposed to take place on Friday, and accusations of political meddling inside the MCD.

The cancellation was denounced by Mayor Shelly Oberoi, who said, “Today was supposed to be the day for the mayor and deputy mayor elections… However, the file for the election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor reached the LG yesterday without going via the elected government. What sort of politics is this, now? She attacked the BJP, saying it held anti-Dalit views and disregarded the constitution.

Oberoi emphasized the significance of the mayoral elections and the fact that the MCD mayor would be chosen from the reserved category this year. “The anti-Dalit BJP is once again murdering the Constitution,” she said, expressing her dismay over the BJP’s alleged obstruction.

The Leader of the House in the Municipal Corporation, Mukesh Kumar Goel, issued a warning about possible retaliation from the Dalit community in response to the cancellation, saying, “There is anger among the Dalit community today… And during the Lok Sabha elections, that resentment would translate into votes cast against the BJP.”

Raja Iqbal Singh, the MCD’s Leader of Opposition, refuted the AAP’s claims, characterising it as “anti-Dalit and anti-women.” “If the AAP wanted to conduct elections, it should have completed all necessary formalities… before the announcement of the general elections,” Singh said, alleging that the party had purposefully delayed the elections in order to hide internal problems.

Sanjay Singh went on to attack the AAP’s leadership, saying it was stifling progress and encouraging corruption. The AAP is a pro-corruption party, he claimed, and it has no interest in adhering to constitutional procedures. It prohibited elections for the mayor and deputy mayor positions as a result.
