To ensure a flood-free monsoon season, Punjab’s Local Government Minister Sanjeev Arora has issued a stern directive for the immediate, time-bound cleaning and desilting of sewerage systems across the state. The move is aimed at preventing urban waterlogging and ensuring that the upcoming rainy season does not disrupt daily life for residents.
Strict Timelines for Civic Bodies
In a high-level meeting, Minister Sanjeev Arora instructed all Municipal Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners to initiate comprehensive desilting operations immediately. Emphasizing the need for accountability, the Minister stated that all major cleaning tasks must be completed well before the first monsoon showers hit the region.
“We cannot wait for the rains to arrive before we act. A proactive approach is essential to prevent the perennial problem of urban flooding. Every manhole and sewer line must be functional to ensure smooth drainage,” Minister Sanjeev Arora asserted.

The Minister has directed officials to adopt a targeted strategy, focusing specifically on:
Low-Lying Areas: Prioritizing neighborhoods that historically face submerged streets.
Flood-Prone Hotspots: Identifying and clearing bottlenecks in the drainage network that cause backflow.
De-silting & Waste Removal: Ensuring that silt and debris extracted from the sewers are disposed of immediately so they don’t wash back in during the rains.

Minister Sanjeev Arora highlighted that the Mann Government’s priority is to create a resilient urban infrastructure. To achieve this, the use of advanced machinery and super-suction vehicles has been encouraged to minimize manual intervention and speed up the desilting process.

Immediate Mobilization: Ground teams are to be deployed within 48 hours in critical zones.
Regular Monitoring: DCs and MC Commissioners must submit weekly progress reports to the department.
Accountability: Any negligence leading to preventable waterlogging will be met with strict administrative action.

By setting strict deadlines, the government aims to avoid the chaos of flooded basements, traffic snarls, and the risk of waterborne diseases that typically accompany stagnant monsoon water.
