Veteran actor Shabana Azmi has shared details of a health scare she experienced while participating in the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) ‘Chalo Sansad’ protest in New Delhi. The 75-year-old actor said she suffered an asthma attack after being exposed to tear gas during the demonstration but was able to recover with the help of her inhaler before rejoining the protesters.
Azmi had attended the protest to express solidarity with students demanding educational reforms and action over alleged examination irregularities.
‘Tear Gas Triggered My Asthma Attack’
Speaking about the incident, Shabana Azmi said that she is an asthma patient and the tear gas exposure led to breathing difficulties.
According to the actor, she always carries her inhaler, which helped her regain control of her condition. She was escorted to a nearby building, where she rested briefly before returning to meet students who had reportedly been injured during the protest.
She praised the determination of the protesting students and expressed admiration for their resilience.
‘I’m Not Supporting Any Political Party’
Shabana Azmi clarified that her participation in the protest should not be viewed as support for any political party or opposition group.
She stated that she has never been associated with any political party and believes remaining independent allows her to speak freely on public issues. According to Azmi, her presence at Jantar Mantar was solely to support students who have been on a prolonged hunger strike while demanding reforms in the education system.
She urged authorities to engage in dialogue with the students rather than dismissing their concerns, emphasizing that they are seeking a better and more transparent education system for the future.
Letter Sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi
The veteran actor also revealed that she and her husband, celebrated lyricist Javed Akhtar, had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi before joining the protest.
According to Shabana, the letter requested the government to initiate a dialogue with climate activist Sonam Wangchuk. She said they waited for a response before deciding to participate in the demonstration.
