On the occasion of Shaheedi Diwas, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann paid heartfelt tributes to Bhagat Singh, along with Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar, remembering their supreme sacrifice for the nation.
The day, observed annually on March 23, commemorates the martyrdom of these iconic freedom fighters and continues to inspire generations across India.
Shaheedi Diwas: Mann Slams Political Opponents
Addressing a gathering, CM Mann said that while several leaders built grand memorials in the names of their own families, they failed to do justice to the legacy of Bhagat Singh. On Shaheedi Diwas, he questioned why such a towering figure has not yet been honored with the country’s highest civilian award.
He also criticized claims that India achieved real independence only recently, stating that such remarks undermine the sacrifices made during the freedom struggle.
“India Would Have Been Different”: Mann on Bhagat Singh
Speaking on Shaheedi Diwas, the Chief Minister remarked that if Bhagat Singh had been India’s first Prime Minister, the country’s direction would have been entirely different. He emphasized that youth leadership could have placed India among the top nations globally.
Mann highlighted that the revolutionary ideals of Bhagat Singh remain relevant even today, especially in the fight against injustice and inequality.
Tributes at Khatkar Kalan and Hussainiwala
Earlier in the day, CM Mann paid homage at Khatkar Kalan and Hussainiwala National Martyrs Memorial.
Marking Shaheedi Diwas, he also laid the foundation stone of the ‘Hussainiwala Virasat’ project worth ₹24.99 crore to preserve the legacy of the martyrs.
Push to Honor Freedom Fighters
On Shaheedi Diwas, Mann highlighted that his government successfully pushed for naming Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport. He also revealed ongoing talks to name Halwara Airport after Kartar Singh Sarabha.
Focus on Education and Jobs
Emphasizing development, the Chief Minister said on Shaheedi Diwas that education is the most powerful tool to eradicate poverty and social evils. He added that the Punjab government has provided around 65,000 government jobs so far.

Health Insurance Relief for Citizens
Highlighting welfare measures, Mann urged people to obtain the ₹10 lakh health insurance card. On Shaheedi Diwas, he stated that for the first time since independence, citizens in Punjab would not have to worry about medical expenses.
Call to Protect Democratic Values
On Shaheedi Diwas, Mann reminded people that the right to vote is a result of the sacrifices made by freedom fighters. He urged citizens to use their vote wisely and not fall prey to inducements.
He stressed that nations that forget their martyrs risk losing their identity.

Recalling history on Shaheedi Diwas, Mann said Punjab has made unparalleled sacrifices for the country’s freedom. He also mentioned the pain endured during Partition, when countless lives were lost.

Concluding his address on Shaheedi Diwas, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann reaffirmed his commitment to building a progressive and inclusive Punjab based on the ideals of Bhagat Singh and his fellow martyrs.
