Hussain Ustara’s daughter Sanober Shaikh files lawsuit to stop Shahid Kapoor’s O Romeo, claiming unauthorized biopic exploits her father’s life.
Sanober Shaikh, daughter of the late Hussain Ustara, has moved a Mumbai civil court seeking a permanent injunction to stop the release of Shahid Kapoor’s upcoming film ‘O Romeo’, scheduled for February 13. The legal action claims that the film is an unauthorized biopic of her father and falsely portrays his life.
Lawsuit Against Makers
Sanober Shaikh filed the suit against producer Sajid Nadiadwala, director Vishal Bharadwaj, and journalist-author Hussain Zaidi. Shahid Kapoor stars as Hussain Ustara in the film, which is based on Zaidi’s book Mafia Queens of Mumbai. In her legal filing, Sanober asserted that the movie was made with the “intent of commercial and monetary gain” without her consent.
Her lawyer, DV Saroj, stated that Ustara has been depicted as a gangster in the film, which could cause irreparable harm to Sanober and her children. The suit emphasizes that the family has the right to live peacefully and that the film’s portrayal of her father could seriously damage the family’s reputation.
Sanober’s Claim: Exploiting a Human Tragedy
Sanober Shaikh highlighted that her father had actively helped law enforcement in Mumbai and across India to track criminals and prevent crimes. She alleged that the filmmakers were “exploiting a human tragedy for commercial purposes” and that the film could tarnish the legacy of her deceased father. The court is scheduled to hear the matter on February 6.

Previous Legal Notices
Sanober Shaikh mentioned in her filing that she had sent prior legal notices to the filmmakers, which were denied by Vishal Bharadwaj and Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment. The producers claimed that the film is purely fictional. However, Sanober submitted evidence connecting the movie directly to her father, including a podcast interview featuring a former police officer linking Hussain Ustara to the story of O Romeo.
She urged the court to prevent the release of the film in theatres, on TV, or on OTT platforms on February 13 or any future date.
Filmmakers’ Statement
At the trailer launch, Vishal Bharadwaj defended the project, saying:
“This film is based on Mafia Queens of Mumbai by Hussain Zaidi, and I have obtained the rights to the story. While the idea and characters are derived from the book, we have added fictional elements. Permission for these additions should have been taken by Zaidi, and I didn’t think personal consent was needed for the adaptation.”
Cast and Production
‘O Romeo’ stars Shahid Kapoor, Triptii Dimri, Nana Patekar, Avinash Tiwary, Tamannaah Bhatia, Disha Patani, Farida Jalal, and Vikrant Massey. The film is produced by Sajid Nadiadwala under Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment and written & directed by Vishal Bharadwaj.
With the lawsuit now in court, it remains uncertain whether ‘O Romeo’ will release as planned on February 13.
