England off-spinner Shoaib Bashir has been ruled out of the remaining two Tests against India after injuring the little finger on his non-bowling hand. The injury occurred during the third Test at Lord’s while he attempted a sharp return catch off Ravindra Jadeja’s fierce shot. The damage, a fracture, will now require surgery later this week, forcing Bashir to miss the rest of the series.
Bashir’s brave effort despite injury
Even after sustaining the injury, the young spinner showed commendable grit. He came out to bat in England’s second innings, facing nine deliveries and scoring two runs before falling to Washington Sundar. Though his time on the field was limited in India’s second innings, Bashir stepped up when his team needed him most.
With India mounting resistance through a 35-run partnership between Jadeja and Bumrah, Bashir, with his injured fingers tightly bandaged, returned to bowl in the 55th over. His determination paid off after tea, when he dismissed Mohammed Siraj by dislodging a bail with a spinning delivery — a breakthrough that sealed England’s 22-run win and gave them a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.
Captain Stokes lauds Bashir’s spirit
Following the match, England skipper Ben Stokes expressed his disappointment over Bashir’s injury, saying, “It’s really unfortunate for Bash. He showed incredible courage — coming out to bat, sitting on the bench, waiting for a chance to bowl. It speaks volumes about what it means to wear this jersey.”
Possible replacements for the fourth Test
With Bashir sidelined, England is now assessing replacements for the fourth Test at Old Trafford beginning July 23. Liam Dawson, who recently impressed with a 4-wicket haul in a T20I against the West Indies, is a top candidate. Left-arm spinner Jack Leach is also being considered. Stokes highlighted Bashir’s eagerness, saying, “Every time I looked to the bench, I’d see Bash ready, waiting.”
Bashir’s impact on the series
Though his series is cut short, Bashir made his presence felt. He took 10 wickets at an average of 54.10, including key dismissals like that of Siraj in the third Test. His absence will be a setback for England as they prepare for the crucial final matches.
