The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly preparing for a major leadership transition in India’s T20I setup, with growing speculation around Shreyas Iyer T20I captaincy ahead of the post-IPL 2026 tours of Ireland and England.
Despite leading India to the T20 World Cup 2026 title, Suryakumar Yadav is reportedly set to lose the captaincy role due to concerns over his recent batting form and fitness struggles. According to reports, the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar has become increasingly worried about the veteran batter’s inconsistent performances.
The discussions around Shreyas Iyer T20I captaincy intensified after reports from Times of India suggested that selectors are eager to begin a fresh cycle and view Iyer as a strong long-term option for the upcoming international assignments and the road toward the 2028 Olympics.

While Suryakumar has enjoyed remarkable success as captain, his recent performances with the bat have reportedly become a concern. Playing for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026, Suryakumar managed only 195 runs in ten matches. Sources close to the BCCI and Team India also revealed that the batter has been dealing with a persistent wrist injury and has continued playing despite significant discomfort.
In contrast, Shreyas Iyer has delivered an outstanding IPL 2026 campaign, strengthening the buzz around Shreyas Iyer T20I captaincy. Leading Punjab Kings, Iyer guided the side to six wins in their opening seven matches while scoring 333 runs in nine innings.
Shreyas Iyer T20I Captaincy Talks Intensify Amid Suryakumar Yadav’s Form and Injury Concerns
Selectors reportedly believe that Iyer’s leadership qualities, calm approach, and consistent performances make him an ideal candidate to guide the next phase of India’s T20I transition. The possible move toward Shreyas Iyer T20I captaincy would mark a major strategic shift for Indian cricket as the team prepares for future ICC tournaments and the 2028 Olympic cycle.
Interestingly, Suryakumar Yadav has not lost a single T20I series since becoming captain, making the potential decision even more surprising. However, reports indicate that his place in the side as a batter is also under review due to his prolonged dip in form.
On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer has not played a T20I match since December 2023, which makes the reports surrounding Shreyas Iyer T20I captaincy one of the biggest talking points in Indian cricket at the moment.
