SPORTS NEWS : Mumbai Indians are reportedly in discussions with Sri Lanka’s white-ball captain Charith Asalanka to potentially join their squad for the IPL 2025 playoffs, starting May 29. This move is being considered as the franchise might be without key overseas players — South Africa’s Corbin Bosch and Ryan Rickelton, and England’s Will Jacks — due to international duties.
Bosch and Rickelton are part of South Africa’s squad for the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC), while Jacks is set to tour the West Indies with England for an ODI and T20I series beginning the same day the playoffs start. Asalanka, known for his powerful hitting, is being seen as a suitable replacement.
Mumbai Indians have already approached Asalanka to play the remainder of the IPL 2025 season. “Sri Lanka’s white-ball captain Charith Asalanka has reportedly been approached by Mumbai Indians to join the squad for the remainder of the IPL 2025 season.”
Originally scheduled to conclude by May 25, the IPL 2025 season was paused for a week due to the India-Pakistan conflict and will now resume on May 17, with the final slated for June 3. This delay has created challenges for several franchises, with the rescheduled matches clashing with international series and WTC final preparations.
If the deal materializes, Asalanka will become the third Sri Lankan player to enter IPL 2025 as a replacement. Gujarat Titans have already brought in Dasun Shanaka, and are reportedly also in talks with Kusal Mendis.
