In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, uploaded on July 1, Hwang opened up about the idea of a U.S. adaptation and named the Oscar-winning actor as his “first pick” to play Seong Gi-Hun, the role originally made iconic by Lee Jung-Jae. The revelation adds fuel to the fire of long-standing speculation around a Western remake of the hit Netflix series.
A Hollywood Gi-Hun?
“If he [DiCaprio] were to do it, I think he would do well as a player,” said Hwang. “Lately, he’s gotten good at loser roles like Gi-Hun’s.” The statement was both humorous and pointed, hinting at DiCaprio’s recent turns in films like Don’t Look Up and Killers of the Flower Moon, where he played morally complex and often vulnerable characters.
Though Netflix previously denied rumors of DiCaprio making a cameo in Squid Game Season 3, Hwang confirmed the discussions existed — but clarified that nothing materialized.
Squid Game US Spinoff in the Works?
The buzz around a Squid Game US Version reignited after actress Cate Blanchett made a surprise cameo in Season 3, seemingly taking on the recruiter role originally played by Gong Yoo, but now set in Los Angeles. Though Hwang denied reports that director David Fincher is already attached and that production begins in December 2025, he didn’t rule out the spinoff entirely.
“If I were officially asked, I’d seriously consider it,” he said, leaving the door open to the possibility.
