The Supreme Court rejects Anita Advani’s plea seeking recognition of her alleged relationship with Rajesh Khanna as a marriage.
The Supreme Court has refused to entertain former actor Anita Advani’s plea seeking legal recognition of her alleged relationship with late Bollywood superstar Rajesh Khanna as a marriage. The decision leaves the earlier court findings unchanged, which held that the relationship did not qualify as a marriage under the applicable law.
A bench comprising Justices M M Sundresh and Prasanna B Varale dismissed the challenge on Thursday, observing that there were no sufficient grounds to consider it. According to a report by the Press Trust of India, the bench described the matter as “luxury litigation” while rejecting Advani’s challenge to the Bombay High Court’s April 1 order.
Anita Advani Seeks Dignity Through Legal Recognition
During the hearing, Advani’s counsel argued that the plea was connected to her dignity and the relief sought through a civil suit. The lawyer maintained that the request for a declaration regarding the relationship was based on the need for recognition and dignity.
However, the Supreme Court declined to intervene in the matter. With this decision, Anita Advani’s plea seeking recognition of her relationship with Rajesh Khanna as a marriage has not received the legal relief she sought.

How the Legal Dispute Began
Advani had claimed that she lived with Rajesh Khanna in a live-in relationship for several years. According to her, she was asked to leave Khanna’s Mumbai bungalow, Aashirwad, in 2012. The dispute arose after Khanna’s estranged wife, veteran actor Dimple Kapadia, along with their daughter Twinkle Khanna and son-in-law Akshay Kumar, allegedly became involved in the circumstances surrounding her eviction.
Rajesh Khanna, one of Hindi cinema’s most celebrated actors, died in July 2012. Following his death, Advani pursued legal action to seek recognition of her alleged relationship with him.
In 2013, she filed a complaint before a magistrate under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005. The complaint named Dimple Kapadia and members of her family. Advani also sought monthly maintenance and a three-bedroom apartment in Mumbai’s Bandra area.
Courts Previously Rejected Her Claims
In 2015, the Bombay High Court quashed Advani’s domestic violence complaint after allowing pleas filed by Kapadia and her family. The court concluded that Advani’s relationship with Khanna was not in the nature of a marriage and that she could not claim relief under the domestic violence law on that basis.
The High Court also observed that Khanna’s family members could not all be included in the proceedings because Advani had not lived with them.
Advani subsequently challenged the dismissal of her civil suit. In 2017, a sessions court in Mumbai rejected her request for similar relief. The Bombay High Court later dismissed her appeal against that decision in an order dated April 1.
The latest Supreme Court decision means the earlier findings remain in place. The court has declined to reopen the dispute over Anita Advani’s request for legal recognition of her alleged relationship with Rajesh Khanna as a marriage.
The case has drawn attention to the legal distinction between a live-in relationship and a relationship recognised as a marriage, particularly when claims for maintenance or other legal remedies are involved.
