The movie opened with a modest Rs 1.63 crore net at the Indian box office, lower than the opening of his previous hit, The Kashmir Files, which had earned Rs 3.55 crore. Speaking to Galatta Plus, Agnihotri revealed that he had to borrow money just to travel to Delhi for promotional events, highlighting the financial pressures independent filmmakers often face.
“All of the money made from The Kashmir Files went into creating The Bengal Files,” he said. “I don’t know what will happen to me after this. The problem is that our ambition is to create something worth Rs 100 crore, but we have very limited funds. We have to look after every penny and finish the shoot in fewer days.”
