Real-life rescue mission hits streaming as ‘The Diplomat’ prepares for Netflix debut on May 9
John Abraham’s latest political thriller The Diplomat is headed to OTT just weeks after its theatrical release. Based on true events, the film will begin streaming on Netflix from May 9, 2025, offering audiences a tense drama built on international diplomacy, hostage crisis, and cross-border politics.
Directed by Shivam Nair, The Diplomat is inspired by the life of Indian diplomat J.P. Singh, who played a key role in rescuing Indian national Uzma Ahmed from a difficult situation in Pakistan. In the film, John Abraham portrays Singh, navigating a high-stakes case when a distressed woman approaches the Indian Embassy claiming she was abducted and forcibly married in Pakistan. What follows is a gripping tale of negotiation, law, and survival.
The film also features Sadia Khateeb, Kumud Mishra, Sharib Hashmi, and Revathy in pivotal roles. Despite being appreciated for its strong performances and subject matter, The Diplomat had a modest box office run, facing stiff competition and limited buzz during its theatrical window.
In a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, John Abraham addressed industry concerns regarding bloated budgets and actor salaries. “It’s already hurting Hindi cinema. We [actors] don’t justify those huge budgets and the huge fees that we get paid,” he said, calling for a leaner approach to filmmaking. He added, “We can’t load a film with an entourage cost as well, it’s ridiculous.”
Set against the tense backdrop of Indo-Pak relations, The Diplomat blends real-world events with emotional depth, offering a portrayal of one man’s resolve to protect an Indian citizen abroad under challenging political circumstances.
The OTT release gives the film a second chance to reach wider audiences, especially those interested in real-life rescue dramas and political thrillers. With Netflix’s reach and timing aligned with a relatively quiet release window, The Diplomat might find the attention it lacked in theatres.
