Why Your ChatGPT Conversations Aren’t Legally Confidential
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has issued a cautionary note for users who treat ChatGPT like a therapist, your chats may not be as private as you think.

Speaking on podcaster Theo Von’s Show, Altman clarified that conversations with ChatGPT do not enjoy the legal confidentiality that exists between patients and therapists, clients and lawyers, or patients and doctors. “So if you go talk to ChatGPT about your most sensitive stuff and then there’s like a lawsuit or whatever, we could be required to produce that — and I think that’s very screwed up,” Altman said.
While many users have begun turning to ChatGPT for emotional support or personal advice, Altman noted that such chats lack legal protections. According to OpenAI’s current policy, deleted conversations are wiped within 30 days, unless retained for legal or security reasons.
Altman emphasized the need for stronger safeguards around AI conversations, saying: “There should be the same concept of privacy for your conversations with AI that we do with a therapist.” He called the issue urgent and said it needs to be addressed as AI becomes more integrated into people’s personal lives.
