The OceanGate Disaster Netflix Documentary delves into the tragic 2023 incident when the Titan sub imploded during a dive to the Titanic wreck, killing Rush and four others onboard.
Lochridge recounts a key moment in 2016, when Rush piloted the company’s earlier submersible, the Cyclops 1, on a dive to the SS Andrea Doria wreck. Despite Rush’s enthusiasm and confidence—he once claimed the Titan would be “pretty much invulnerable” after testing—Lochridge said Rush lacked piloting experience.
During the dive, Rush accidentally got the sub stuck in debris beneath the Andrea Doria’s bow. Lochridge had to take control, carefully maneuvering the sub away to safety. “He had us jammed good and proper. I said to him, ‘Please don’t do anything. Just give me the controller,’” Lochridge recalled.
Following his safety concerns, Lochridge said he was effectively “cut out” of the Titan project. His warnings went unheeded as OceanGate pushed forward with its ambitious deep-sea tourism vision.
The OceanGate Disaster Netflix Documentary also highlights these tensions and the risks involved in the mission that ended in tragedy, raising questions about safety and leadership decisions at OceanGate.
