Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath announces that singing Vande Mataram will be compulsory in all schools and colleges across the state to promote unity, patriotism, and respect for Bharat Mata.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday announced that singing “Vande Mataram” will now be compulsory in all schools, colleges, and educational institutions across the state. The announcement was made during his address at the ‘Ekta Yatra’ (Unity March) held in Gorakhpur.
The Chief Minister said the initiative aims to promote a deeper sense of national pride, unity, and respect for Bharat Mata among the younger generation.
“There should be a sense of respect for the national song Vande Mataram. We will make its recital mandatory in all educational institutions so that every citizen of Uttar Pradesh is filled with pride and devotion for Bharat Mata,” CM Yogi Adityanath said.
A Call to Strengthen National Unity
Yogi Adityanath emphasised that the regular recitation of Vande Mataram will serve as a symbol of India’s cultural heritage and a powerful tool to strengthen patriotic values among students.
He added that this practice is essential to instill unity and counter divisive forces that attempt to weaken the country’s integrity.
“Expressing gratitude to the national song, Vande Mataram should be sung in every school and college. We must identify and confront the elements that threaten national unity so that no new ‘Jinnahs’ can emerge to challenge India’s integrity,” he stated during his address.
150 Years of ‘Vande Mataram’: A Symbol of National Pride
The Chief Minister’s announcement comes shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a two-year nationwide commemoration marking 150 years of Vande Mataram in Delhi.
The celebration, which began on November 7, 2024, will continue until November 7, 2026, honouring the iconic song that played a pivotal role in India’s freedom movement and continues to embody the country’s unity and resilience.
Written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay in 1875 and published in his 1882 novel Anandamath, Vande Mataram was officially adopted as India’s national song by the Constituent Assembly on January 24, 1950.
Speaking at the Delhi event, PM Modi said the song represents India’s soul and eternal spirit. “Vande Mataram is a true symbol of India’s unity. It inspired generations during the freedom struggle and continues to fill every Indian with energy, devotion, and pride,” the Prime Minister said.
A Nationwide Push for Cultural and Patriotic Revival
The Uttar Pradesh government’s move aligns with the central government’s broader efforts to promote national symbols, cultural heritage, and patriotic education among youth.
By making Vande Mataram singing compulsory, CM Yogi Adityanath aims to ensure that the state’s educational institutions not only focus on academics but also nurture a spirit of national service, unity, and cultural awareness.
The Ekta Yatra concluded with students, teachers, and local residents joining together to sing Vande Mataram, marking a powerful display of unity and patriotism in the heart of Gorakhpur.
