UP CM Yogi Adityanath assures carpet industry of government support amid US tariffs, pledges to open trade with 10 new countries to boost exports and empower artisans.
Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath inaugurated the 49th International Kaleen Mela and the 4th Carpet Expo in Bhadohi on Saturday, interacting with carpet entrepreneurs and exporters from India and abroad. Addressing concerns over recent US tariffs, the CM Yogi Adityanath assured industry stakeholders that the state government stands firmly behind them and that the challenges posed by tariffs would be met with new opportunities.
Turning Tariff Challenges into Opportunities
CM Yogi Adityanath emphasized, “Whenever challenges arise, they bring opportunities with them. The US tariffs are a decision of just one country. We are proactively working towards free trade agreements with nations like the UAE, the UK, and others, which will open new markets and avenues for our industries.”
Highlighting the government’s commitment, he announced the formation of a high-level government committee tasked with monitoring the impact of tariffs and finding solutions to mitigate them.

Revival and Growth of the Bhadohi Carpet Industry
Reflecting on the carpet industry’s journey, the CM Yogi Adityanath recalled that 11 years ago, the sector was on the brink of collapse. However, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bhadohi, Mirzapur, and Varanasi carpet clusters witnessed a remarkable revival.
Today, the Carpet Expo Mart in Bhadohi serves as a vibrant hub, attracting 300-400 buyers from 88 countries, compared to a handful of foreign buyers at the very first expo. This surge highlights the growing global demand for Bhadohi carpets.
MSME and ODOP: Catalysts for Industrial Growth
CM Yogi Adityanath also highlighted the state government’s focus on promoting district-specific industries under the Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME) and One District One Product (ODOP) schemes. This initiative has brought global recognition to traditional products like Bhadohi carpets, Muradabad brass, Firozabad glass, and Varanasi silk.
Since the launch of ODOP in 2017, UP’s exports have soared past ₹2 lakh crore, an achievement many had not anticipated.
Empowering Artisans and Women
The CM Yogi Adityanath underscored that the carpet industry is not just a trade but a vibrant tradition supporting 25-30 lakh artisans and generating around ₹17,000 crore in annual exports. The sector has also become a significant platform for women’s empowerment, encouraging them to work from home and achieve financial independence.
“Do not underestimate Bhadohi; it is a symbol of our state and nation’s economic strength,” Yogi said, stressing the industry’s revival as a key part of UP’s identity since 2014.
Plans for Regional Development and Future Growth
During the event, entrepreneurs highlighted the need for developing the Mirzapur-Vindhya corridor and connecting it with regions like the NCR. The CM Yogi Adityanath confirmed, “Efforts are underway to develop Bhadohi, Varanasi, and Mirzapur as a unified development region.”
CM Yogi Adityanath also responded to concerns about labor shortages by sharing plans to link the industry with local women and workers to boost self-reliance and sustainable growth.
A Vision for Expanding Global Markets
Looking ahead, the CM Yogi Adityanath set a bold vision to open trade pathways with 10 new countries to counteract the impact of tariffs imposed by individual nations.
“Our aim is not just to safeguard the industry but to elevate it to new heights. When one country imposes tariffs, we will open doors in 10 other countries. This is the spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat—turning challenges into opportunities. The government stands with you, and your future is bright,” he affirmed.
