With the onset of the winter season and a biting coldwave sweeping across Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has launched a comprehensive winter relief campaign. As part of this initiative, the CM personally visited ‘rain basera’ (night shelters) in Gorakhpur to ensure that the shelters are equipped to offer warmth and safety to the needy population during the harsh winter months.
CM’s Visit to Night Shelters and Distribution of Blankets
On Wednesday, CM Adityanath visited two night shelters in Gorakhpur where he interacted with the residents and personally distributed blankets, marking a compassionate start to the state’s winter relief efforts. His visit is part of a broader strategy to ensure that all night shelters across the state are fully operational and well-equipped to protect individuals from the severe cold.

Allocating Resources for Adequate Shelter Capacity
The CM Yogi Adityanath emphasized that the state government has already allocated sufficient funds to ensure that the ‘rain basera’ across Uttar Pradesh are fully functional. He stressed the critical role of these shelters in providing a refuge for the homeless and vulnerable groups facing the coldwave. “With the coldwave setting in, we are committed to ensuring that these shelters operate at full capacity, providing blankets, woollen clothes, and all necessary resources to the people,” CM Adityanath stated.
Directives for Local Bodies: Bonfires and Additional Support
In an effort to decentralize the relief measures, CM Adityanath has directed all panchayats and local bodies to arrange for bonfires in public spaces to offer immediate relief to those outdoors, especially in areas where night shelters may not be easily accessible. This initiative will provide instant warmth to those still facing the cold without shelter.
In Gorakhpur, the Nagar Nigam is managing 14 ‘rain basera’, which can accommodate between 700 to 1,000 people. CM Adityanath assured citizens that enough funds have been allocated to every district to ensure the widespread distribution of blankets and woollen clothing, so no one is left exposed to the cold.
Public Outreach and Engagement: ‘Janta Darshan’ at Gorakhnath Temple
Earlier in the day, CM Adityanath conducted his regular ‘Janta Darshan’ at the Gorakhnath Temple premises in Gorakhpur. During this public outreach session, he met with citizens from different parts of the district, listened to their grievances, and reviewed their written applications. The Chief Minister assured timely resolution of the issues raised and encouraged citizens to actively participate in community development activities.
He also took the time to engage with children at the venue, emphasizing a compassionate and inclusive approach to governance, alongside the execution of the state’s winter relief programs.
