In the aftermath of Urfi Javed’s victory on Karan Johar’s reality show The Traitors, former contestant Apoorva Mukhija has come forward to defend her fellow player against the wave of abuse and threats she has been receiving online. In an exclusive interview with News18 Showsha, Apoorva Mukhija acknowledged that while she and Urfi were often at odds, Urfi played the game with a “great strategy” and deserved the win. “Honestly, Urfi played a fair game. She did play a very number game where she had a lot of people in her corner, which honestly is a great strategy to play the game with,” Apoorva said. She added, “Anyone who is the winner deserves to be the winner because they have done something right.”
Apoorva Mukhija also expressed disappointment over the backlash Urfi has faced since her victory, condemning the abuse and threats. Citing Indian cricketer Virat Kohli’s observation about how women are often unfairly blamed in society, she said, “People in this country love to blame women, either when they win or when they lose. I think it’s unreal that those of us who played the game have not taken it that seriously.”
She emphasized that both Urfi and fellow contestant Nikita must have played their parts well to claim victory, and “nobody has the right to go and abuse them.” Apoorva Mukhija highlighted that the harsh criticism is partly due to a segment of the audience’s exposure to the abusive culture prevalent in shows like Bigg Boss, which she says The Traitors is not.
As the reality show concludes, Apoorva’s words call for respect and civility in acknowledging the winners and their efforts, urging fans to celebrate rather than vilify them.
