UP extends gram pradhan tenure by 6 months, appoints them as administrators in 57,000+ panchayats to ensure smooth development work.
The Uttar Pradesh government has extended the tenure of gram pradhans (village heads) by six months. Following approval from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, an official order has been issued, allowing outgoing village heads to serve as administrators in more than 57,000 gram panchayats across the state.
The move comes in view of delays in the panchayat election process and the time required to complete the reservation formalities.
Development Work to Continue Without Disruption
According to the government, the decision has been taken to ensure that development work in rural areas does not come to a halt. Essential services such as sanitation, drinking water supply, MNREGA works, road repairs, and other local development projects will continue smoothly under the new arrangement.
Officials confirmed that the Panchayati Raj Department issued the order after directions from the minister concerned, ensuring administrative continuity at the grassroots level.
57,000+ Panchayats to Come Under Administrative Control of Ex-Pradhans
From Wednesday onwards, all 57,694 gram panchayats in Uttar Pradesh will function under the supervision of outgoing gram pradhans acting as administrators. However, their role will be limited to routine administrative functions.
For major policy decisions or financial approvals, permission from the District Magistrate through the District Panchayati Raj Officer will be mandatory.

Reservation Process Delays Prompt Extension
The extension has been necessitated due to delays in finalizing the OBC reservation structure. A dedicated Backward Class Commission is currently collecting population data across districts to determine reservation percentages.
As per rules, OBC reservation cannot exceed 27 percent, even if the population is higher in a particular area.
Previous Practice Replaced
Earlier, Additional Development Officers (ADO Panchayat) were usually appointed as administrators after the completion of gram pradhan tenure. However, this time the government has decided to retain outgoing pradhans in the administrative role to ensure continuity and address demands from the Panchayat Raj system.
Other Panchayat Bodies May Also See Extension
The term of gram panchayats ends on May 26, while the terms of block panchayats and district panchayats end on July 19 and July 11 respectively. This raises the possibility that similar administrative arrangements may also be implemented for these bodies.
