“I couldn’t believe I was defending influencers, but this kind of elitism has to be addressed,” the comedian wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Vir Das shared his appreciation for working with unknown designers and acknowledged how important the Cannes red carpet spotlight is for emerging talent. “It’s not for me, but I respect the underdog energy,” he added.
Vir Das took a direct jab at Bollywood personalities, urging them to “stop looking down on influencers for coming into their domain.” He called out film folks who criticize influencers at Cannes yet appear on their podcasts and collaborate with them to promote movies. “The feeling you get seeing them walk down the carpet with you is the same feeling we get listening to your lame-ass story about how you gave up sugar in their domain,” he quipped.
He further acknowledged that while influencers might not always be “as well dressed or good looking,” they are often “more interesting” — a bold statement during a festival known for its glamour.
This year, influencers like Masoom Minawala, Parul Gulati, Sakshi Sindwani, Anushka Sen, Sarah Sarosh, and Nitibha Kaul turned heads at Cannes, further blurring the lines between traditional film stars and digital-age celebrities.
Adding to the buzz, Vir Das had earlier joked about Cannes’ new dress code restrictions, revealing he’d planned to wear a “78-foot-long, off-shoulder voluminous nude gown,” which the organizers banned, leading to his decision not to attend this year.
With voices like Vir Das’s calling out industry elitism, the Cannes Film Festival’s evolving relationship with influencers is sure to remain a hot topic in entertainment circles.
