Origin of the Rumours
The speculation gained momentum after screenwriter Kamlesh Pandey, who co-wrote Rang De Basanti, revealed in an interview that Manoj Bajpayee was initially signed for the role that Aamir Khan eventually played. Kamlesh explained that the film had been in development for over six years without success. The project was originally intended to be a small-budget film with Manoj attached to the lead role.
“We had been roaming around with the script of the film for 6 years, and no one was ready to make that film,” Kamlesh shared. “We had signed Manoj for the role that Aamir played finally. We thought we would make a small film; we didn’t have a big budget.”
The turning point came when Aamir Khan heard the script. Enthralled by the story, he decided to take on the project and even brought the legendary composer AR Rahman onboard. This change in backing helped UTV, which had rejected the film twice earlier, to give the green light immediately.
