Major Updates & Core Feature
Next-Gen Privacy Tool: WhatsApp is testing a brand-new “After Reading” disappearing messages feature for Android and iOS.
Smart Trigger: Unlike current fixed timers that start when a message is sent, this new countdown begins only after the recipient opens and reads the message.
Key Specifications & Mechanics
Custom Timer Options: Senders can choose how quickly a message vanishes post-reading, with options including:
5 Minutes
1 Hour
12 Hours (varies up to 2 hours in some iOS builds)
24-Hour Safety Expiration: If the recipient never opens the message, it automatically deletes after 24 hours so unread sensitive data doesn’t sit indefinitely.

Independent Side Sync: The message deletes from the sender’s device based on the initial sent time, but stays active on the receiver’s end until their specific “After Reading” timer runs out.
Why It Enhances User Experience
Fixes Current Flaws: Traditional WhatsApp disappearing messages (24 hours to 90 days) can vanish before the recipient even checks their phone.
Secures Sensitive Data: This ensures critical, temporary information is actually seen before it self-destructs. It is ideal for sharing:
One-Time Passwords (OTPs) and entry codes
Addresses and live location coordinates
Temporary Wi-Fi passwords and confidential notes
Availability & Rollout Status
Beta Deployment: The feature is currently rolling out to select beta testers on Android (v2.26.19.11) and iOS (v26.19.10.72 via TestFlight).
Global Release: Meta is currently fine-tuning the feature, with an official public rollout date for all users expected in the coming months.
