Released in 2013, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani became an instant hit at the box office, captivating audiences with its vibrant exploration of youth, friendship, and self-discovery. Starring Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Kalki Koechlin, and Aditya Roy Kapur, the film directed by Ayan Mukerji earned a special place in the hearts of viewers and continues to be cherished years later. Its recent re-release in theatres in 2025 only reaffirmed the film’s staying power.
However, despite the film’s lasting impact, the question of a sequel has lingered for many fans. Some might hope to revisit the beloved characters and explore what the future holds for them, but Kunal Roy Kapur, who played Taran Khanna in the film, doesn’t share that sentiment. In a recent interview with Bollywood Bubble, Kunal shared his thoughts on the possibility of a follow-up film, making it clear that he doesn’t believe a sequel is necessary.
‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ Sequel Unlikely, Says Kunal Roy Kapur: ‘The Journeys Are Done’
Kunal’s stance on a sequel is simple: the stories of these characters have already been told, and there’s no need to revisit them. “It is complete. It is already done, right? The journeys of those characters are done. They are not needed really,” he said. For Kunal, the film’s conclusion brought closure to the lives of its characters, and any attempt to continue their stories would feel unnecessary.
In the original film, Taran (played by Kunal Roy Kapur) is a significant but relatively minor character in the lives of the main ensemble. Taran marries Kalki Koechlin’s Aditi after she realizes that her one-sided love for Ranbir Kapoor’s Avinash (Avi) is no longer viable. The movie ends on a note of personal growth and transformation for all the characters, and while some may feel that a sequel would offer a fresh perspective on their lives, Kunal feels that this chapter is best left closed.
When asked whether Aditi and Taran would still be together years after the events of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Kunal offered an interesting take. Drawing on the arc of the film, he stated that while it’s difficult to predict the dynamics of any marriage, it’s unlikely that the couple would end up in a divorce court.
As for whether Aditi would be “happily” married to Taran, Kunal remained a little more noncommittal, admitting that while he couldn’t speak for Aditi’s emotions, Taran would probably be content. This reflects the optimistic tone of his character in the film—someone who, despite his somewhat goofy demeanor, seems to find contentment in life and relationships.
While Kunal is firm in his belief that a sequel is unnecessary, others in the cast, including Ranbir Kapoor, have hinted at the possibility of revisiting the characters. Ranbir, who played Bunny in the film, expressed interest in a potential follow-up film during an interaction with fans in 2023. He shared that Ayan Mukerji, the director, had already envisioned an engaging story for a sequel, one that could take place 10 years after the original film. In fact, Ranbir revealed that the sequel would explore where Bunny, Naina (Deepika Padukone), Avi (Aditya Roy Kapur), and Aditi (Kalki Koechlin) would be in their lives after a decade.
A Story Better Left Untold?
While the fans of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani would undoubtedly welcome any opportunity to revisit the lives of Bunny, Naina, Avi, Aditi, and Taran, Kunal Roy Kapur’s comments suggest that the story has come to a natural end. His perspective reflects the idea that certain cinematic moments and characters are best left as they are, without the need to revisit them for the sake of nostalgia or commercial appeal.
Whether or not a sequel to Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani ever happens, the original film’s legacy endures. As Ranbir Kapoor pointed out, “Never say never.” However, for now, the lives of the characters seem to remain in the past—a beautiful, completed chapter of Indian cinema.
